Review:
I can understand how most people see this film in the context of Hurricane Katrina. But even as a former resident of the Gulf Coast that sat Alicia, Claudette Allen, Rita, and Ike, I saw this film in a much larger context. It goes beyond the stereotype and archetype - the inhabitants of the bath arent bad drunks at the mercy of the environment, they are people in the world they live. Hushpuppy a drunken father, his father, with many of the flaws and strengths of the immortal epic heroes - anger, pride, genuine love and concern. Hushpuppy is not just a little girl though, she is the child - carries a magic that is real close to her world, imaginatively related to all things. The rest of the world is a place for things and machines, paperwork and regulations and is never actually called, you see, because it would have reduced. Everything in this film exists within the framework of the archetype, and if you watch it with that in mind, his various messages take on cosmic significance. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted - she would take a few days for the whole thing to sink in completely Outstanding!
